I don’t know if it was the WD-40 or the bigger, properly sized screwdriver, but the old plates and rusty frame have finally been removed and I no longer have to worry about getting pulled over for expired tags. Now I just need a new frame, but it won’t be a steel one like I had previously, for obvious reasons. Any recommendations on who makes a good plastic frame?
The other option is a vintage piece I have sitting around. It’s a frame from the one and only car dealer in my little hometown back in SoCal. They sold Buick and Mazda (strange combo) but this frame only lists Buick. But it’s a nice piece and I'm not sure I want it exposed to the crappy weather here in the Midwest.

Or you could just not.

I don’t use frames. Aside from situations where the colors would clash without a frame, I don’t see any need for one.

Something I want to do with my RAV4, and you suggested, is buy a vintage dealer plate frame from 25+ years ago. If there are multiple of a certain dealer’s frames on eBay, buy a couple in case something happens to one. Too bad (for my purposes) that Toyota didn’t have a mass closure of dealers in the late 2000’s. If I had a Chevy, you bet I’d buy a Bill Heard or Tom Jumper frame. My dealer frame got damaged when I was rear-ended, making this a likely purchase, and I don’t want my dad’s “Marietta Scion” frame to get damaged.

Found some real gems.

Something just looks wrong without one. I don’t need to advertise anything or share my favorite hobby, but I just want to clean up the appearance a little.

I have been running the bright red reflective frames for a number of years now for increased visibility...

You could try a silicone frame - might help with rust issues in the future.

I like it. Affordable, simple and should keep vibrations to a minimum.

The best part of that is it goes behind the plate which is so much better than in front of it.
(I have something similar but metal on both my and my wife’s cars .)

Recessed fra me is the best frame !
I got this one from Walmart. It was maybe $ 8 at the time but now they only charge 4 whole dollars for it . I took that picture a couple years ago and the paint has faded to a bit more of a matte look but it’s still fine.
I’ve moved since then and there aren’t any Walmarts close by, and I didn’t feel like piecing together a $35 online order with Walmart to get free shipping on a $4 license plate frame, but Advance Auto Parts & Amazon sell a similar item. It’s $8 at Amazon and $9 at Advance . I convinced my dad to get 2, for both ends of his XC60, because the dealer had already screwed the front plate into the bumper. I also put one on the back of my wife’s CX-5 which thankfully has a proper front plate mount that doesn’t punch holes in the bumper and doesn’t need a frame .
Dad is very happy with his plate frame. My wife likes that it cleans up the look of the back of her car but doesn’t really care.

Unrelated topic: why in the everloving fuck is the official Missouri registration stickers method to stick a horizontally-oriented sticker vertically in the middle of the plate? I need my blanky.
